Today was a pretty exciting day for me, it was the first day I let the chickens free range. Now it was only for a couple of hours in the afternoon but being that I have never owned or raised chickens before this made me quite nervous. The whole time I felt like a mother hen watching over her little chicks, literally! #LOL For the first hour I walked around with them then after that I constantly checked on them every 30 minutes to make sure they were all still there and all still alive! Needless to say, it was a very successful outing and the chicks loved every minute of it. They really enjoyed digging for bugs and merrily clucked while doing so. They were also easily put back into their coop before dark after getting some treats. I definitely won’t be doing that every time, but it seemed to work pretty good for the first time to make sure all of them went back in and were safe for the night.

It is so funny how things have changed. When we first got the chickens, I was pretty skeptical about how I would feel about raising chickens however after feeding them every day and spending time with them I have really started enjoying them. I was never aware of how amazingly entertaining they could be. It has definitely been much more than I ever anticipated! I mean, have you ever seen a chicken run? #Haha Also, I could have never imagined how much personality these little animals would have. They are hilarious and a lot smarter than people give them credit for. I have learned so much from these little creatures in the short time that we have had them and continue to learn something new every day from them. More importantly, I have learned that no store-bought egg could ever compare to the beauties I collect out of our coop. The bright orange yolk and fresh taste is something you just cannot pass up.

Furthermore, I am grateful for being able to have chickens because I believe they have helped me feel not so alone out here in the country. There is just something about having these little animals follow me around that makes me happy or maybe it is just a sense of pride! Hope you enjoy the pictures from our first outing!
